I am new here to the forum but thought I would stick my big toe into the wood chips here and ask a question. I am trying to turn spoons and or ladles and while I can turn the form for the spoons I am looking for the tool that will scoop out the spoon part. I have seen that some use what appears to be an air driven tool that has a ball shaped bit attached that can be used for this purpose. I have searched the internet several times but I am apparently not using the correct search terms. Can some one tell me what the name of the air driven tool is and the place where I can order it and also what is the ball shaped tool that actually does the carving and also where to get it. If there is a better method out there for removing the wood from the spoon part let me know.

Thanks,

Don

Sorry, I can't help you Don. You see, my memories of wooden spoons are...well...let's say, less appealing than I would like for them to be.:o I do try to see the silver lining however! When I see the way the younger crowd carries on today maybe a few wooden spoons would have done some good. Of course I know no one else ever had any of those memories:eek: so I guess it's OK to continue with the project. Anyway, spoons and all, WELCOME to the Vortex!!!:)

Gouge. Carving type versus an in-cannel. You'll want a good hold for the rough piece, but v-blocks and clamps do just fine. Follow with a scorp if you've got one, or one of these beauties http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=32641&cat=1,310,41069 . The mechanical means are noisy, dusty, and can ruin the piece or hurt you fast. I've carved a few spoons in my time, and the gouges beat the die grinders all hollow.
