Merry xmas everyone!
I'd like to step up to a jig to help sharpen my gouges. Up to now I've been doing it freehand with mixed results and much wasted metal. I can't afford one of the commercial jigs at the moment (spent all my money on turning tools and the lathe...) so I was wondering if anyone has plans or instructions for building one from scratch
Thanks in advance..

Hi Joe,
.... What kind of commercial jigs did you have in mind that could possibly be handmade or duplicated? I, too, would be interested in that same sort of thing. Most recently, I came across a Handmade bench sander by Allen Bookout on another forum, “familywoodworking.com”, which was super NEAT. I thought, the name of the thread was “Shop made 12” disk sander”. To be specific, I would like to find plans or an original copy of a jig that is simple to make that will rough-in router blades before fine honing. A universal jig that could have other versions or even uses as well, for example, sharping mower blades etc.

Merry Christmas back to you as well.

Boyd

There are a few types out there - Mike mentioned King Heiple's which is an Ellsworth type.
There are also a few wolverine style jigs:

Jim Ketron helped me build a wolverine style like his:

(thanks again Jim!)

Jim made his from steel stock, the others are made with wood.

FWIW,

can't remember the rules about links here

Joe,

Here is a link to a shopmade sharpening system:

Darrell Feltmate has a lot of other great tips and instructions as well as other shopmade tools on his site.
