I also tried a carved sign w/router. Took a piece of barnwood and ran it through my planer just to knock off the top. And carved. I'm no good at free hand lettering, some of them are not uniform in size and a little crooked. But it's fun. My wife liked it.

I think it looks great!

Did you draw the letters on first?

Joe,
I traced the letters with stencil paper, then free handed the letters with router. Didn't keep the router too steady, I'm learning, I like the look of it, kind of rustic.

Very nice sign. Did you use a router bit that is the thickness of the letters or did you use a smaller bit with multiple passes?

Hi Greg,
Nice work, looks good ! The letters are nicely stylized, tracing seems
to work. This summer my parents bought a big camper to enjoy their
retirement, which was a big deal to them. I found some cedar and hand
routered a quick sign. I hear you when you refer to the challenge of
holding steady. The post was just a shop temp.
They were pleased anyway...

I used a V-bit, then spray painted the letters, then belt sanded the face,
and last topcoat for weather.
Lucky I wanted it to look rustic too !
take care,
Walt

I love router carving signs. I have made a few over the years and all are the rustic style. I like the style of your letters.
