Glue and wood...Super glue

Since I am using super glue on pens and various wood turnings, how do YOU keep the tip of the bottle from clogging up? I can't use the whole bottle in one shot and I would like to be able to use more of the glue at a later time. Any tips for keeping the bottle tip open for future use?

You can't necessarily totally elminiate the need to buy some extra tops/tips for your CA bottles, but one way to minimize clogs is to sharply rap the bottle on a table a few times to "shake" the adhesive down out of the tip. Then, let the container sit there for a few minutes before you put the top back on. I've found that to be quite effective in prolonging the life of the top/tips.

Have you turned any Corian yet? I turned my first today and I could detect the seam. Have you had any trouble with seam showing?

Hey Clem....

One blew apart on me and it appeared to be a weak seam. Another I did had a very visible seam in which I tossed. I will try again soon though as I have a few more small pieces to experiment with.

What are you guys using to glue it up with? It's been a while for me, but I used some thin CA glue, clamped it tight and left it sit overnight. Bored, glued in the tube with medium CA and turned it the next day. I gave it as a gift to the guy who supplied me with a bunch of Corian cut-offs and even he couldn't find the seam. He had always used some "special" adhesive, made specific for that purpose, but he was honestly impressed with the job the CA glue did. YMMV, but it worked great at this end. :cool:

I use a safety pin. Whenever I finish using the super glue, I place a safety pin in the hole and make sure the glue bottle is standing upright. This has never failed me. When I go back to use it, I just pull out the safety pin. The safety pin is slightly larger than the hole. This creates a seal.

As an aside, I recently found out that CA glue should be stored in a refrigerator to extend its shelf life. I kept my batteries in the refer and the CA glue on the shelf. According to a consumer help show I watched, it should be the other way around. Who knew? :rolleyes:

Using thin CA is pobably the answer. I used medium and even with heavy clamp pressure the seam is visible in a few places. I'm going to try some thin CA and see if this improves the situation. I also need to sharpen my gouge. That Corian is a little tougher than wood.

Yeah, Clem. Give the "thin" as shot. (Worked for me...) And yes, it is tougher than typical wood, but as an aside, I found a sharp skew chisel to be the hot tip for Corian. Again, YMMV, but give it a shot. Good luck and have fun! :cool:

As Byron pointed out, keeping the CA in the refer will greatly help with the clogged tip problem as well as extend the life of the glue itself.

As to the Corian questions, 'I know nothing !!'. Not a turner or any other fan of corian.

But as to keeping CA in the refer, been doin that for 20 years and it really helps.
