Just completed this one. I've been anxious to try one of these and finally got the chance today. 6x6x2, BLO'd.

Stealth gloat: I bought the Grex pneumatic ROS that several Creekers were recommending to me a few days ago. It was the perfect tool to have when it came time to sand the wings of this piece. Thanks for looking.

Goodness!............I've turned several zebrawood b/s but nothing as beautiful as that Mark! The way that grain "bends" and "curves" on the interior of that bowl! STUNNING!

PS.....I really like my Grex!

Very nice work, Mark!

Here's a retouched version of your second photo that may be closer to actual colors...or at least brighter.

Awesome bowl! Were you able to sand it on the lathe with the Grex or did you have to take it off first and sand it "flat work" style?

Mark.........Did you get the 2" or 3" grex?

Jim, thanks. That does indeed come much closer to actual colors. Funny thing, I posted this thread on LOML's PC which has a flat panel display, and my pics looked OK there. Now I'm looking at those pics on my CRT monitor and they look dark. I never realized until now how different these two monitor screens are.

Ken, I have the 2". They said a 3" pad was available as an option but for now the 2" will suffice.

Robert, the only part of the wings I could sand on the lathe was the innermost part, where there is a constant uninterrupted wing around the circumference. The rest of the wings I sanded with the Grex "flatwork style." The actual "bowl" was sanded on the lathe.

Mark,
That's a real beauty! I like the way the grain flows up and over the rim into the bowl. It is also super sweet to see the grain be interrupted by the wings only to reappear on the other side along the bowl surface.

Mark, you're cranking em out at a staggering pace bud. Nice to see such quality coming from your spinny thing, especially after the snags you encountered a while back. Very nice work.

Thanks guys. Dick, that was my hope, to give the appearance of a bowl pushed through a board. This was another first for me.

Hope all you guys have a Merry Christmas.

That's a KEEPER for sure. Very pretty in design and the wings add a beautiful touch to the overall piece.

Not only a keeper, just outstanding,If only the Grex would make me do work like this, I would buy today. Unfortunately, I think it will take more than a new sander :o

I'm with Scott....I'm gonna' need more than a fancy sander to come up with something that pretty! :) Great job, Mark and yes, you pulled off the "illusion" quite nicely. Well done!:)
