I want to thank Curt Fuller for his inspiration on this bell.

It only took me three hours to complete this project! I think I will keep my day job. The base is crab apple that a fellow teacher gave me and that is where the bell is going.

I made three handles and chose the dark one. The other two are maple and carrot wood. At least I think it is, it made my lathe all orange!

Real nice Pete! Never heard of carrot wood - color looks pretty intense. What kind of wood is the dark handle?

Steve, I think the dark wood is zebra wood but I don't know for sure. I got it in one of those "bags of wood" from Woodcraft. It is oily with stripes in it so it is a guess by me.

Darker than any zebra wood I've seen. Maybe blackwood, or ebony?
I have some orange/red wood like that that's labeled something like chak te kok, african I think. Nasty smell and dust, but boy does it look great!
Very nice bell. Art takes as long as it takes. I'm sure the Sistine (sp?) Chapel could have been sprayed in a day or two, rather than the year or so it took to paint.
You're either doing art or production. Art, I suspect at this point. You want to carefully consider if you WANT to do production...

That bell is a beauty Pete! But as for the inspiration, I think it goes back a lot farther than me. It just sailed through the gap between my ears one day and then kept on going.

You must have had a similar thought process as mine though. I make a bunch of bells and a bunch of handles and then start mixing and matching to see which ones look best together.
