I would like to make a honing setup using an old 6" grinder. A guy at my club suggested making a MDF wheel and polishing compound. Since I don't have a cirle jig, do I rough cut the wheel and finish it on the lathe? What size MDF? Also, which compound should I buy?

Thanx,
Pete

Turning the wheel on the lathe should be perfect. I'd glue to 3/4 inch peices of MDF together to get a wheel 1.5" thick. That should let you hone your largest skew!

One suggestion, reverse the direction of the motor so the wheel's surface is moving away from the cutting edge of your tool. If the wheel is turning the "normal" direction, towards the cutting edge, you are apt to ruin the wheel by catching the edge.

Pete,

I turned my donut chuck by ....first...draw a circle with a compass....2nd...cut outside the line using a jig saw.....3rd drilling holes and mounted it my face plate.....4th......turned it circular.

I used some 1/2 plywood and it turned well. I was surprised it didn't have roungh edges. I used the evil skew.......
