I picked up some wood from a friend, but have no idea what it is. Can anyone help me on this. Some of it came from a tree that had 2" thorns, really sharp. Some of it the pith was all soggy and wet.

Yep I agree with Jim. Looks like the honey locust we have around here.

It is locust for sure. There are 2 honey locusts that you can find out there. One is Moraine Locust (a couple of varieties) which I believe is a nautrally occuring hybrid of the wild honey locust and has little in the way of thorns. These can be huge, 24 inch plus at the stump. Hard wood with very nice color that helps it sell very well. The wild version is much smaller and has huge thorns (6 inches plus). I can remember these from Missery (Missouri) where I grew up.

Thanks guys for you help now I know what I have Black Walnut, Honey Locust and Sycamore. The only thing left is get my lathe and start turning.
