Here is a HF I turned today out of Sassafras. It is 2 3/4" tall and 7 3/4" across. It has a coat of Watco Danish Oil on it now. When that dries will put a couple of coats of wipe on poly. This thing was a lot of fun to do. I took it from green (wet) right to about 3/16". Bottom could have been a little better but overall happy with it. The LOML likes it too.:D :p

Really nice piece with good grain. I have never turned any sassafras, but I bet it smelled good.

Bernie, I like the shape, looks like good grain. Haven't seen any Sassafras here in Vermont. Is it hard or on the softer side? I have been using what ever I can get before my friends use it for heat. Glad we have had a mild winter so far!

Thanks everyone. Sassafras is a softer wood and can be pretty stringy when turning green. It is some good smelling stuff when turning also. It has some nice grain like Elm. I did notice tonight after we got home from church and it had set for 3 or 4 hours that two cracks started on the top on either side of the opening. CA time. Hopefully that will stop it. First time I have turned green down to finial dimension. The walls are around 3/16" thick.

Bernie: Nice wood and nice turning. My question is how do you get the soup out ?
