I guess this is a big butter dish or a very small cake plate. The wood is Dalmatian and the size is 11” in dia. X 6 “ tall. This wood turns like steel , it is possible to get perfectly square details such as the inside cover lip over the plate lip. The final is large as I try to make everything I turn useful for something, I call it a handle.

Nice piece Jim. I want to try one and you clinched the deal for me . Love the shape and the " handle " final on top. You really did the wood justice. What did you use for finish?:D

Paul: I use a floor grade two part plus thinner high gloss polyurethane. After this dries a couple of weeks it will be wet sanded to 1000 with soap and water and buffed to a good shine .

Very nice Jim!:) Do you have a brand name on that 2-part poly stuff?

John: It is made in Lima and I dont think it would be available in the States. The name is TEKNO DD.

Have to say we mis-apply the term finial quite often. I take it as a purely decorative item. A handle or knob, well, that's another thing entirely, and demands some sturdier stuff to stand up to use.

Beautiful, Jim. Love the wood and like the form even better. Looks like a cake plate to me.

As always Jim this is an awsome example of quality craftsmanship. My wife has been wanting a cake plate and has not been able to locate one she likes, this might be an option to satisfy her search. Guess I may have to try my hand on one soon.
