I just wanted to make a bowl. Had a pretty good idea of the form and got started. with the piece on the faceplate, I turned the outer form which left some material toward the top. When I turned it around and put it in the chuck, I was sweeping back and forth and came up with this.

I had no intention of leaving it this way...I was just goofing around....but before I hack this off, I thought I'd throw it up to the committee. You think I oughta make a bowl or a flared out hollow form? It's Maple and 10" in diameter.

Wow, tough call here. The larger portion from the wide rim to the headstock is a lovely flowing bowl shape, but I first thought hmmm, that would be an interesting HF. Sorry I'm not much help. Which is normal for me-just ask my wife:D .

I like the form as a whole. Has a nice set of curves going.

But.... bowls and HFs are something for which you can say, "Been there done that".

Soooooo... How's about a lidded box? Here's one (http://www.heirloombowls.com/lidded_maple_box.jpg) for inspiration.

oh-oh...John, I think maybe Andy might have something there...

yeah...I'm lookin'...and thinkin'.

I'd have to use another wood to fill the center. The screws for the faceplate go pretty deep. I have some cherry and some walnut at the ready. I'm thinkin'....

That would be an interesting Hollow form. don't Whack it off, embellish it. Complete the hollowing and then make a collar of some exotic black wood and add a wick for a Tea light.....

Holler it out as it stands, it's a graceful, unique shape.

I with Gary. Hollow it out. Make a HF out of it with the opening the size of your faceplate. Be a awesome looking piece John.

I agree with Gary and Bernie! Great shape as is!

Another vote for hollow form. If the shape isn't broke (which it definitely is not), don't fix it.

Vote for a lidded box....with a long finial;)

Yup...lidded box/bowl with a nice finial on it. Would be very pretty! :D

John I like too. Just to throw in my two cents I vote for the lid and a finial, although a collar using Travis' tutorial might look nice also. But I'm thinking the lid and finial would look best.

John, I like the form you have now. You can look at it again after you hollow it, and add a rim or collar, or top, but the form is super.

Okie Dokie! Thanks for your input everyone. I've been hollowing this morning and took a little break. It's going well so maybe I won't muck it up too much.:o Like Glenn says, it needs to be hollowed anyway and I reckon I'll see what it looks like with a little hat.:)

Just now checking in. John, what you have here is something that would make a beautiful lidded box as Andy was pointing out. THat is exactly the direction I would want to take. And a nice ebonized finial would set it off just right, achieving shazam status.:D

I like the lidded box idea too but I'm not sure what wood you would use for the lid since the lid portion of that has the holes from the face plate screws. Maybe you could use that wood, cut a groove in a circle where the screw holes are and inlay something, turquoise or even a contrasting wood. Then incorporate the same thing into the finial.

But you know I like that bowl shape....

Yep, I agree with the cap and finial thing. It's a great form for such a thing.

Ok...So I really stink at finials!:o
But nevertheless, I did get it done.:) The hat is made of Redwood Burl and the so-called finial is a piece of the mother blank that I cut off prior to turning the bowl. (one of the corners). It is finished with spray lacquer (hic):o 'cuse me. 10" in diameter and 8.5" tall.

Looks good to me. You used a nice piece of wood to compliment the bowl too.

Alright John it looks pretty good to me, the wood is deffinately top shelf and your finish is great. Finials are as diverse as turners not all of us do the same things, I happen to like it.
