So I've had this length of 12/4 x 8 cherry bouncing around the shop for ages that was left over from something back before the table saw got all rusted up and stuff. Seems as though I've moved it a few hundred times since it was always on top of something else I need to get at. Came in handy once when I had to do surgery on my wife's car too. But I tripped over it yesterday for the last time and determined to use it or lose it.

I'm calling it Chopper One for two reasons. First it reminds me of those nasty little cutters in a food processor. And also because of the sound it made when it was twirling around on the lathe.

It's a snoodge under 3" tall; a hair over 8½” wide; and just about 23½” long.

Uh Oh! Dinner bell - that means cake, ice cream, and moxie. Maybe this will hold you for a spell.

Gotta run!

Could you put it on your head [much like a hat] and then put a nail [or 3" screw] through the middle of the bowl into your head?

Spin it would and fly you could!!

Helicopter Andy. You could do the traffic scene over Benton Falls. :D

That is interesting and I'll bet scary to turn. Nice finish, too.

It looks like a hurricane symbol to me except that it's turning the wrong way...clockwise. :)

WOW!!! I made fists with both hands to get my fingers out of the way just looking at the pictures. Good thing there wasn't a catch and ejection - it may have gone through a wall or ceiling.

Seriously though, great idea and a beautiful piece.

Really Awsome work, that is a stunning piece. Just one question though, just how much did Mrs Hoyt help with that one? Very classy.

Only ? is, did you have to add more weight to your lathe to keep it from taking off ;) Really, an OUTSTANDING job Andy.

..... Helicopter Andy. You could do the traffic scene over Benton Falls. :D Karl Ummm, Karl - two cars per day on Main Street is not quite what I'd call a scene. But should that double to four a day, know that I'll be flying recon :D

Thanks, guys. It was a bit of a challenge to do this. The distal ends are about an eigth inch thick or so; and that's a lot thinner than I intended, but the thump thump thump action got to my nerves and I had event after event try to keep the surfaces smooth. In the end, I just resigned myself to a lot of hand sanding.

It would have been easier if I'd been able to boot the lathe up into warp speed, but every time I tried to do so I'd lose vac pressure. Danged wings were indeed trying to launch it!

Didn't realize until after I posted the pics that you can hardly see the bowl portion down in the shadows. So here's a few more to ponder.

Thanks for the comments. Not sure if I'll try another - way too much manual sanding for this lazybones.

Put that on the lazy susan in the middle of the table and that contraption will be used to teach people not to double dip their chips!!!
Great looking bowl Andy, and by the way, Happy Birthday late.

This was my "chopper one" Didn't take much sanding, but it does the job. Onions have a bowl rather than just an anvil.

Well done Andy! That thing makes me nervous! Does the LOYL call you Stubby now?

I forgot one important thing in my first post about your winged bowl or helicopter hat, whichever the case may be.

That is a beautiful piece and I admire your skill and intestinal fortitude in managing to complete that without major damage to you or your shop.

Now, back in the air, I think there's some action over at 2nd & Main. :D

Sorry Karl. You're assuming that we have two roads in close enough proximity to one another to actually form an intersection.

Remember, this is Maine. You can't get there from here.

Was just looking at Benton Falls using Google Earth. You're absotutely right, it's hard to find two roads that intersect. And I believe you that it's impossible to get there from just about anywhere.

I found it quite interesting that the quality was excellent as I zoomed in on the area. Much better at closer range than many places I've seen while looking at Google Earth.
