I am looking at getting a metal shear but don't know what brand will give me the best value and quality for the money.

I was thinking about the 12" Grizzly Model, but don't know about the quality of cut.

Any suggestions/comments:

I have used the bigger one, about a 36" cut, and it works fine.. They stopped distributing the smaller one around here, but I sure would like to get one.. The price of the small one I seen last was about 200.00 Canadian.. It was not the Grizzly name, but I think the majority of these things come out of China anyway with a whole host of different names on them..

Bill,

Will your shear cut thin metal sheet like AlumaMark and leave a nice clean edge?
Many shears will roll the edges of thin sheet, its hard to find a shear style cutter that will do a nice job and the abrasive cutter models carried by the engraving suppliers are very expensive.

Hi Bill,

Good quality metal shears are made by "Accu cutter" in PA.
Bit costly but these cutters do not bend material at point of shearing and are suitable to cut brass 0.032".

I purchased this shear from signwarehouse...

http://www.signwarehouse.com/shop/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SC&Product_Code=SE-CRA-2001EVO12-BLC&Category_Code=&Search=shear&Search_Type=OR&Offset=0

I can highly recommend it. High quality and it's so sharp you can even cut paper with it!

LaserBits sells it for $399...signwarehouse has the same thing for $319. Only drawback to it is that it is limited to a 12" cutting width, but for my laser stuff, this is fine.

It also has a small footprint and is portable, which is great in 'my' shop. It cuts AlumaMark perfectly without leaving any sharp edges.

Hope this helps.

I'll second the Accu Cutter. They have a new one, guillotine type, that goes for about $1000 that is the best on the market for the awards type metals. Smooth cuts and square alignment as well as repeatable.

It's my next piece of equipment. I have a New Hermes now which is cast iron and very good. It's about $400. You can find these on ebay as well.

I don't own the 36 inch machine, only used one for a few jobs, but not for Alumamark..It 'should' cut it ok, as long as the blades are sharp, and fit togeather firmly.. I have a 24" Ideal Kutrimmer that I bought about 20 years ago, it came with the upper blade for cutting plastic (rowmark type) but it will also cut metal.. The blade is now pretty dull so I will replace in the new years it with the upper metal cutting blade for brass/alumark and anodized stuff

Diacro shears are very good.... they are still found on ebay frequently. A 24" shear is the size that I have.

Took delivery on the Grizzly Shear today. Overall it works fine, but needed a few modifications (longer springs) in the hold down and guide bar needed another hole drilled. It was rather greasy because it is a China product (they must dip everything in grease before packaging!).

The line of sight is very good, doesn't bend metal or leave any marks and edge is very smooth.

Cuts a true 12" across and best of all only cost $269 delivered. Cut a bunch of .040 aluminum and it went through like butter. Even cuts plastic cleanly.

I will build a longer entry table to attach to it, but for now it does what I want.
