There is a Powermatic 66 up for auction near me -- 5hp, 3phase motor. What do you think about swapping the motor for 3hp, single phase? Any idea about where to look for a replacement and how much it would cost? The current bid for the saw is $450 with a day and a half to go. I've read some of the posts here about phase converters, but I'd rather stay with 220 in the basement.

This site has one listed for $424. I think you can find it cheaper. It's a 184C frame.

I would put a static converter on it. The simplest and cheapest option. No changing of the heaters in the mag switch and it would cost under $200 and give the same results of having changed to a 3 hp single phase motor. http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=297-3540&PMPXNO=952399&PARTPG=INLMK3
The other option would be an inverter (VFD) from www.factorymation.comThis (http://www.factorymation.comThis) would give full power and require no other modifications to the swith either. The down side is it's a bit tricky to program.

A new motor that fits is going to be pricey. Since the motor isn't that big I would look into fitting a VFD on it.

Take a close look at how the motor attaches to the machine and how much clearance there is in all dimensions. If it won't take an off-the-shelf motor you'll want to factor that in.

Only been under the hood of one PM 66 and that was a long time ago. If memory serves me correct, the motor was a standard NEMA 56-C mount. This means that there are four bolts on the face end of the motor that are used to mount motor. Northern Tools sells a NEMA 56-C face motor for pressure washers. It is TEFC, reversable, cont duty rated , BB, 3450 RPM. Only comes in 1 1/2 and 2.0 HP though. Either is less than $200
