anyone have any ideas what this implement is? it's got a bunch of grooves on the tip arranged in parallel.

That's a very small picture, but it does sort of look like a checkering tool.

Today you buy checkering tools from Brownell's. In the old days, gunsmiths made their own, and that's what it appears you have.

Thanks a bunch, guys! There were several people that came by and commented that it might be used for checkering a gun but I was reluctant to believe them since I couldn't imagine how you would get a perfect cuts. A tool from another day I guess.

the only tool he used was an old-growth hickory tooth-pick. :-)
Just a smile from someone who is better at buying tools than using them.
