Here's a few lights I did, two from maple (mine really DID crack easily) and one from mesquite that I bought from Curtis when visiting San Antonio last Thanksgiving. One thing I found out is that you need a drill bit bigger than 1 1/2". I think 40 MM might be just right. 1 5/8 may be a tad too loose?

The one forefront and center is my favorite. Beautiful wood and very nice job!

Nice looking lamps, Ed! :) As for size of the hole, I couldn't exactly tell you, as I hog the receiving holes out with conventional turning tools. And you know, I'm not even exactly sure why I like doing it that way better! :o

Front and center is certainly my favorite on these...but they are all very nice! I think that for a small object like this, burls and other really figured stock make for a great project. And you can get a lot of mileage from your burl stock, both in general and in use of off-cuts, etc. I think that this is why the one in front really jumps out at me...in addition to the form.

Yea I turn the inside instead of drilling it also. It seems to add to the truning of the project when it is completely turned. But to each his own

they look great Ed, iI use a 1.5 " drill and clean it up with a skew to exact fit. too many drills too many decisions ... :D

Ed, very nice work. What size blank did you start with and what are the finished dimentions?

Thanks to all for your comments. The pictures did not do them justice. The larger ones were about 4.5x 4.5x 3.5" high. They finished at 4x3.25". The mesquite was smaller, finishing at 3.5 x 2.25"high. It's a good way to use pieces too small for bowls/vases. I agree, burl or other figured wood is best.

Nice job Ed!
The 1 5/8" is a tad larger than the lamps but will allow for wood movement.

I like them. While trying to sell some last weekend, I had a couple made from a honey locust limb, and had drilled the pith out and filled with coffee grounds so they would not crack. I explained how all 4X4's bought at the hardware store had cracks because they had the piths in them. I told the customers if they bought one of these from me they could tell everyone they bought it from a guy that had just drilled the pith out of it. Well it is funny if you say if kind of fast in front of a group of people.
