I finished a confetti lamp made of maple, and, what started out as a tiny crack, spread out about 1.5 inches. Well, I hate to throw it out, so I need an excuse to explain the crack. I'm sure that others have had this dilemma too. I was thinking something like, " it's not a crack,it's just the wood's way of exploring it's new environment", or," it's not a crack, the wood is getting ready to give birth". Any other thoughtful suggestions will be appreciated. Or, if requested, I'll just put down my crack pipe:p .

I dunno Ed.

Sure doesn't sound like it's all that it's cracked up to be.

Standard approach is to flaunt the fault. Contrasting fills are the most common, though some leave it alone after cleaning up any obvious fuzzies.

Maybe an artsy name, too, like Crevasse Lamp #5.

You could tell them it is just the wood enjoying its new freedom after being squeezed by the weight of the rest of the tree all its life. ;)

There are really only two kinds of wood, wood that's cracked and wood that's gonna crack.
