I want to get a vise and I'm wondering if anyone knows how these two compare in relation to each other. The jorgensen 41012 or the Anant 53ED. They seem to be selling for about the same price. Is either one higher quality, or has better features? I am just starting with woodworking so I don't know much about what to look for.

www.workbenchdesign.net/rvises.htm (http://www.workbenchdesign.net/rvises.htm) I know, that's where I originally heard about the Anant. I figured those two looked good and in my price range. That page seems to say they are both good. I might conclude from their wording that the Record/Anant would be considered better, but it's not entirely clear. They don't say a whole lot about any partilcular vise.

and the link you gave should have an l on the end "...html". ;)

Hans,

Welcome to the Creek!
I recently looked at the same models that you mentioned. Both look like excellent vises. In the final analysis I purchased two Wilton vises because of the removable pivoting jaw, 13 inch opening, built in full-width bench dog and the enclosed screw. Amazon had a good price.

Good luck with your decision,

Rob

Just to confuse the issue... I bought a 52 1/2 Anant a month ago, same model # as my 25 year old record, the record in my case is better quality then the Anant. I'd have to say better quality all around although they do look pretty much the same. The machining is better on the record. From the same writeup you mention I thought they would be closer to the same, don't know about the Jorgy, couldn't find one local, I asked the same unanswered question.
If I didn't have the Record I'd probably be happy with the Anant, as my son will be...

I also own a Wilton - I have the slight smaller 7" version but it has all the features. I member on woodnet sold it to me and I have been very very happy with it! I have the install manual for it if you ever buy a used one. It was faxed to me by WMH toolgroup when I told them what I bought. Great customer service.
