I went to the workshop with the idea to turn Xmas ornaments. There was such a mess that I decided it would be better if I put some order before. When I got the Escoulen chuck in my hands, it tickled me so much that I ended turning a box

Very nice work Claude! What kind of wood is it and what did you use for a finish?

Claude, I like the form. Did you change both the top and bottome axis points or just the top, to get that shape?

Steve:
The wood is very old piece of boxwood. The finish is a mixture of bee wax and carnauba.

Rich:
The wood is mounted on a Escoulen chuck. This chuck has a kind of sphere that you can turn in any direction.

Thor:
I first do the box and a very small stem, then, using the Escoulen chuck I turn the second part of the stem, finally, putting it in the opposite direction I turn the base. In a way I just change the top axis.

Nice looking box!

You could also turn the stem between centers by changing the center point at one end. The box and foot could then be done by mounting in a conventional scroll chuck. This would require some delicate turning because of the thin stem. However, you should tell LOML that it can't be done without an Escoulen chuck.

Claude, don't be hard on yourself! It is almost never what we want but rather what Mother Nature hides inside her handy-work.:) Beautiful!!!

I’m afraid I have not completely understood how you would do that..
On a normal chuck you could of course carve the box while you have enough wood, and then the part of the stem which is within the same axel. But then? How do you held, in a conventional chuck, a piece with a 45° angle, and change the angle in the opposite direction to turn the base? I am sincerely interested to see it as that would represent a sure economy of a wonderful, but expensive, chuck. Aren’t they all?
