ok gurus of finishing i would try some sample boards but i don't have time. This is what I have done mistakenly. I'm building a clock out of walnut I decided on blo and amber shellac as the finish so i sanded with blo and after I did that I started to wish i would have stained it first to make it just a bit more uniform in color. So now I know you cant stain over blo but what would the affect be less than desirable?

As long as you didn't add the shellac, you could use an oil-based stain, but you will get less absorption than you would on bare wood, especially if the BLO has cured. Another option is to use a glaze or gel stain to tone the project to your liking.

As to not having time to do sample boards...well... ;)
