Disk Sander Recommendations?

Having just completed a restoration of an older 20" bandsaw, my focus has now shifted towards a floor or bench sander.

In my opinion, the belt/disk sander is redundant, so I am thinking of just going with a larger disk sander.

Who makes a reputable large disk sander?

I am having difficulty finding very many to choose from.

How large are you talking about?

Woodtek makes floor-standing 20" sander, can be reversed, cast-iron table, 2hp 30V 12A, single phase. Goes for $1,399.99 plus $93.00 shipping.

They also make a benchtop 12" unit, 3/4hp 115V, 12A, single phase, for $249.99.

Just depends on how big you want to go.

Check out the Jet 12" Disk sander, Model 708433 JDS-12B. It's over a hundred pounds, has an impeller that creates its own dust collection, miter slots running parallel and perpendicular to the disk, a brake to quickly stop the heavy disk (it turns for a long time when you shut it off)...

Edge sanders are nice, but back to your original question...

Sounds like you don't mind rehabbing older machines. If this is the case, Master, Max, State and Oliver all made really nice disc sanders in the 16+ inch range.

My favorite is the Master 24" pot belly shown below. Watch e*ay, Woodweb and local auctions (look at metalworking auctions, too as they also use disc sanders).

I actually have been looking for arn - but decided perhaps it was a futile search. I'll keep looking and look into edge sanders as well.
