Last one before the big Guild Christmas show next weekend. This one was a bear! Worked on and off for 3 days hollowing it. There are 3 main sections divided by the voids. One of them only has about 1 1/2" of solid wood holding it on at the bottom. I cleaned up the inside as best as I could with the scraper on my 1 1/4" boring bar while the whole thing was wrapped with Saran wrap and tape. 12" diameter by 7" tall. One coat of Antique oil then several coats of Deft lacquer.

I seen a lot of burl turned and turnered by a lot different turners........but this takes it. There just not words for this. I always liked the inclusion, and defects turned in with the bowl. I am always amazed with what you turners can do with an gnarly ole chunk of wood.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm curious as to what RPM you were turning that piece at.

Other than a few minor grammatical errors I find nothing to critique. Your spelling is much improved, by the way.

Oh, by the way...

Holy Smokes! An amazing collaboration bewteen yourself and mother nature. Well done!

I'm curious as to what RPM you were turning that piece at.

No idea Mark. I think I ended up hollowing around mid speed on my PM. I had to pay more attention to listening to the wood, it would set up some weird harmonics if I wasn't careful with the cutters.

I have no experience with these things but can I be your agent? You know for the book deals, videos, autobiography, personal appearences, etc.

Truely outstanding piece.

That's AWSOME Travis!!!! I "just" don't see how you keep'em together!!!! All the wood you turn must be very obedient wood under your control. ;)

Is this where I ask to see if anyone might be interested in a used lathe, tools, chucks, etc...? :o Doubt I can match anything close to that if I live to be a hundred! Magnificent, Travis. :) (Or, "Travis The Magnificent"!) :D

Travis,

Phenominal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't tried the Saran Wrap but have used the self-clinging tape from UHaul. Found it did leave a bit of sticky residue but functioned fine.

Again, exquisite!!!

Gday Travis, that is another beautiful piece you have turned and well shot too.

It looks like a beautiful finish to boot, and I bet it is silky smooth to the touch.

You said you finished it with lacquer, so i am assuming you rubbed out the lacquer as the final process....
How did you keep all those nasty voids and natural edges clean from all the lint and cutting powders etc?

Ron Journeau
11-29-2006, 9:14 PM
And I know I woulda ended up using it for firewood, and as far as what I could do with it, I woulds been justified to watch it burn....what a beauty..

Tim, I was dreading that. Somehow I got lucky and everything clicked, that's straight from the 5th coat of Deft spray lacquer.

Well, Travis, I have to say that I don't like it. I don't like that you can do that and I can't. Out of curiosity, why did it take three days? I'm sort of imagining you taking a cut, sharpening the tool, sitting on a stool and looking at it for a few minutes, taking a deep breath, chanting a mantra and taking another slight cut, etc. I'm sure no alcoholic libations were part of the process.
It would be interesting to see some pictures of how you held it on your lathe when doing both the outside and the inside. The thing just looks so fragile!
I'm sure the show will go well for you.
Joe

Yup Joe, that's pretty close. Except the the occasional puckering and subsequent outbursts when I would bump the opening with my boring bar, it was a breeze  ..........NOT! This was about the point I called it quits and came back the next day with the Saran wrap and tape. You can see I kept my diamond hone close at hand. ;)
