Hello,

I had some fun this weekend on the lathe, I turned a lidded box from a piece of ambrosia maple.

This is the largest box I have turned yet, it’s palm sized. I was trying to replicate a bit of an acorn shape. It does look a bit heavy in the lid.

I did try to hollow the lid to take the same for as the outside of the top.

The finish is a few coats of Watco and then Bealled the following day.

I was hoping for a nicer finished look from this piece of wood, but this is what I got.

I will be donating this to the Oakville Suzuki Violin organization, for a fund raising silent auction this Christmas.

Thanks for viewing,

Take care,

Jim,

As I was looking at your post, my wife came up and commented on the nice "acorn". This before you mentioned it in the text. :)

Nicely done, I only wish I could pull something from the lathe as nice.

jim,

#1...beautiful turned box.

#2..is a question...have you ever seen an acorn that wasn't top heavy;)

Jim, that is simply awesome! I really like the shape, and the Maple is beautiful. Nice finish too. I think the proportions are good, it just fits the shape nicely. Thanks for sharing the photo with us. That should raise some good bucks at the auction. :)

Hi Jim,

Looks really nice. I really like the way the grain followed through from the between the lid and the bottom. It doesn't look top heavy to me. In fact, it looks just about right. I'm sure someone is going to appreciate it.

Looks like an acorn from here. Nice job. The thing I like about turning is you never know what the wood will reveal! Now if you did some knurling on the top it would be perfect...Just kidding!

Jim -

My friend, that is outstanding work. Very nice. Should cause a bidding war!
