Nope, it is not wood, but a Banksia Pod. This thing was interesting to turn with all the voids. It even has velvet like fuzz. Tried a "weed pot" thing complete with a small glass tube. Stands about 5" tall and 3" wide. Was supposed to have more depth at the top, but a catch required a design change on the fly. Finished with 4 or so coats of spray lacquer.

I've got more than I could ever want(over 14" long each) and I absoloutly HATE them!! hooooooorible things,

I've seen those things in the local Rockler store and always wondered how they'd turn out. Interesting to say the least. Way to go Barry...um...from Australia. g'day!

Barry that is a nice job bud. Looks like you did that thing justice. I saw one at Rockler's but decided to pass. Didn't look like fun to turn at all.
