Anyone know and has had good experiences with people dealing with old hand tools like planes? I know about e-bay but that don’t seem to excite me too much. Would rather just find a dealer with a set price and go from there.

Dave,
I have bought from Sandy Moss @ http://www.sydnassloot.com/tools.htm
and WalT Q @ http://www.brasscityrecords.com/toolworks/toolindex.html and been quite happy.
There are lots of other folks on the net, but I have not bought from anyone but Sandy & Walt. Just google vintage tools, you will get lots of hits.

I bought a couple of things from Jon Zimmers a while back and was pleased with the tools and his service.

I'll second Brass City, Walt is a wealth of knowledge on old tools and a joy to deal with.

Walt at Brass City is without a doubt the best on the net. His planes are well described and very well priced. No suprises when you get them unlike eBay. Nice guy too.

Dave: I have a variety of surplus stanley and other planes, generally bench planes, and if you're interested let me know maybe we can work something out. RN

Thanks to this thread, I just got off the phone with Walt at Brass City
I ordered this #5 type 19:
http://www.brasscityrecords.com/toolworks/tools/planes/jacks/5_19/519.html
and a Miller's Falls #4 clone:
http://www.brasscityrecords.com/toolworks/tools/planes/smoothers/fours/MF900/MF900.html
Walt even threw in a chipbreaker so I can rehab dad's old Craftsman smoother.

That #5 is sweet! Congrats, and for only $30 bucks. Such a deal.

Funny thing is, I was calling about another #5, but it was sold. Considering that a Buck Brothers jack at the Borg is about $35, it was a no brainer, and with the lower price, I bought the MF almost as a whim. They both work spectacularly well -- as in "Oh, so this is what everybody's been talking about?"
Yes, I'm slipped onto the slippery slope indeed. ;)
