I'll bet everyone else has known this forever, but I just figured it out and I thought I'd share.

There is a good reason why the adjustment screw on a bench plane is reversed. I have always had to think twice every time I adjusted the projection of the blade from the sole. I would look at the knob, look at the yoke, look at the chip breaker and have to picture how it was that I would turn the adjusting knob to move the blade the way I wanted. Finally, I had a eureka moment.

Just turn the knob as if it were connected directly to the blade. I should have known there was a good reason for this design which has lasted so long, but it just became clear to me and my life became a touch easier.

Except on some of the Sargent planes like the 409 where the adjustment knob turns counterclockwise. I always have to reset the plane after having worked with most of my other planes.
