So what small projects have you guys made? Today I made two small boxes using a tablesaw, brad nailer and tightbond II glue. First one came out OK, the second one came out pretty good. Post some pics of what youve made.

Did this box last year as an Xmas gift for my mom. It was my first attempt at doing an inlay. Woods are Curly Cherry and Bloodwood. Finished with BLO/Tung/MS. (Click on the images below for a larger image)

Nice rosary box John. Here's a few of my smaller projects: This jewellery box I made for my wife from a rather ornery block of hard maple with a part of a knot through it. The inner tray is curly (tiger?) maple.

This one is a small toolbox that I made at school. It now resides under my bench at work and provides a hiding place for my smaller tools. The temptation to borrow them is so much less when they're out of sight! The box is birch laminations on the sides and top w/ finger jointed corners. Birch ply front and back. Birch drawers w/ walnut inlay and knobs I turned on the school lathe.

This last one is a carving mallet I made out of ash and "Desert Ironwood" whatever that is. The best part of this projest was that the head of the mallet was originally an atrocoiusly ugly souvineer-type carving of a whale that I found at a local thrift store. I shaped the head on the bandsaw then on an edge sander because I was too scared to try to bring a turning tool to it. The handle I made in the lathe. Once to two parts were epoxied together I sanded it on the lathe to get it as close to round as I could. It is burnished with a bit of paper towel and Carnuba wax. Now when I really need to "whale on it!" I have the right tool.

All boxes built for my wife; if she doesn’t take a fancy to one … it’s out the door to other family members.

With no consideration for wood movement, so far the box is still in one piece showing no signs of moving. Maybe its just small enough to avoid movement problems, six or seven coats of wipe on poly probably helps somewhat.

Wow! Sweet! I like that so much I may make one or 3 for wifey and daughter. And maybe my mom too.

I'm working on some torch lamps for a bedrood. The woodworking part is over, and now I'm working on the plexiglass shade.

The first shade I made was a failure. The laminated glue-up of the pieces showed the acrylic glue in the joints. I'm looking to purchase of 'white' plexiglass and try it again.

In hindsight, I thought the shades may be the problem. I should have built them first and did the woodworking last. Here's a pic in CAD, and one of the wood body.

cheers, Jeff :)

This goes back a few years, but it's small!
It's a communion kit I made as a Christmas gift for our pastor. I've since made 5 more for student pastors that came to our church for their "field" training.

I made this CD holder for my mother last Christmas. The trim and runners are walnut and the body is curly maple. Several coats of clear stain and then wipe-on poly.

I just finished building four of these small jewelry boxes this weekend. They are made from Cherry with a Birds Eye Maple veneer on the top to give some contrast. One is for my Grand daughter and the other three are for Xmas presents.

I made this earlier this year. It's Tiger Maple and some nicely figured mahogany.

Here's a little stool I built a while back.

50723

The top is veneered MDF and the legs are walnut. It's the one in the center of this picture.

50724

I put a spline in the legs cross grain to strengthen them since the top is pretty short grain.

All-in-all, I was satisfied with the way it came out.

I have been practicing simple finger jointing on my router using salvaged pine siding milled down to 3/8” thick. Despite my first few boxes (wine bottle boxes with sliding lids) looked a lot like mini coffins, I was pretty proud of what I had learned.

Then I viewed this thread. Wow, am I humbled, big time. Obviously, I have a lot of learning and practicing to do before I can even dream of building some of these projects.

Nice work people!!

Don't worry Ben, you're not alone in being humbled. Working small is tough. I was all proud of the simple Oak urn I made for my Sisters Bulldog untill I saw this thread.

They give us something to strive for.

Always on the lookout for smal project ideas. We have two small boxes containing the ashes from two of our pets. Putting them in a nicer box is a great idea. Thanks!
