A three phase starter is simply a three pole contactor. You can use one, two or all three of the contacts. Therefore, it is fine to use this starter on your single phase machine. Be sure to size the heaters (thermal overloads) if so equipped to the current of your motor. The voltage of the coil must be considered as well (i.e. it must match your line voltage, or you must provide the appropriate transformer).

There is more info on wiring these at: http://wiki.owwm.com/ow.asp?MotorStarterWiringDiagrams if you are not comfortable with the wiring.

You can use a three phase starter for single phase (just hooked one up), but single phase would draw more amps on each wire for the same HP.

Look at the amp rating to see if you can use it, or you might just need different heater elements.
