cleaning old wooden rulers

I have picked up a few of the old Stanley wooden rulers with the brass hinges that need cleaning and I wanted to find out how to clean the wood portion of them. I polished the brass hinges easily but some of the wood has some discoloration that is black and I wanted to know what should I use to clean the surafce but not harm the wood or the markings on the ruler, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought one a while back and I just used some 0000 steel wool, some kind of lubricant(I've heard of Hand Goop(?) being used), and a light touch. I tried a little Oops with the steel wool but that requires an even lighter touch. Good luck!!
