A while ago I made this salad serving bowl for my neighbor:

Now I'm working on a set of salad bowls for her. She couldn't decide if she wanted natural edge to match or normal edges. So I made a coupla prototypes (all from sycamore):

While hollowing the NE one I stopped the lathe to use my digital calipers (apologies to Bill G :) ) to feel the thickness of the walls. "Uh oh." I was sure it was going to be a funnel, but after turning it around on the friction chuck and being veeerrrrrrry gentle, I ended up with:

Don't ya just hate that. I did the same thing on 2 of 10 bowls for the kids. Momma has those two on the table for candy bowls. :p

The way I know I've gotten the bottom too thin is when I use the laser to sign the base...and can read my name from either side. :eek: :mad:
