My father in law is building a new house.

I wanted to get him a laser device to help when it comes time to hang the pictures and shelves in the house.

Any recommendations on which ones work, or how much you have to spend to get a good one?

Whatever you buy, make sure it is self-leveling.

Last Christmas I received a B&D Bulls Eye Laser Level Stud Finder as a gift. For hanging pictures and installing shelves, it works great.

Steve, I bought the little Sears laser level for just that purpose - hanging pictures, shelves, etc. I mounted it to my camera tri-pod and used it to get my lumber rack brackets on the same plane. Not too fancy but it works as advertised.
