I am building a arts and crafts style bed that has several 3/4x3/4x17 spindles that sit in a dado, the wood is cherry. The spindles sit in the dado about a 1/8th of an inch at top and bottom. My question is how much does cherry change during the seasons(longer shorter)? I live in the midwest. Thanks Troy

White - not an expert but I don't think you will see much lengthwise swing on the spindles. More movement will occur cross-grain than along it.

The information you seek is in the December 2006 issue of Fine Woodworking in Christian Becksvoort's article on wood movement. There is a very handy table for most common species as well as information on how to do the math.

Yep, the shrinkulator will tell you how much the wood moves laterally and longitudinally. It assumes that the length doesn't change and from what I've read and been told, that change is negligible.
