Good day

I believe that you know it but I'll share it with you anyway.

The punching idea is not mine, I saw it on the Net.

It will take a few "punches" and checks but you can get very precise 90*.

This works, except and unless you have the problem I ran into on one of my squares. I went through the procedure five or six times and could get the outside angle right but the inside was off, or, the inside angle was right but the outside was off. I finally tracked the problem down to the fact that one leg was not cut at the factory with parallel sides. The leg was wider at the 'angle' end and narrower at the outboard end. Since I use the outside angle more, I just did it and marked the square with paint that the outside angle only was correct.

I have used the punch method, but ran into the same problem as George. Now I take a sharp pencil with me to the borg and test the squares on a piece of MDF in the stack (inside and outside of both legs). If I bang up my current square enough to warrant adjustment, I'll just go spend another 15 min. and $8 to get a nice shiny new one. But, the punch method does work for at least one leg ;)

A related problem with squares is that the two edges are not straight. Before you punch the heck out of the square, it is good to test the two edges against the straightedge, and use a file to straighten them if they need it.

I knew there was a trick something like that, but since I wasn't sure, I only banged tentatively on my framing square to align it. That didn't work.

I'll hit it good and solid in the right place with a punch tonight and make it square.

Thank you for your replies

Now that you mentioned about the width of the legs, I run down to the garage and checked it, and yes, you are correct.

So, I marked the square for use only from the outer sides.

Thanks
