I found a few old saws in my hunting this weekend. I am just getting into hand saws so any info would be helpful. Particularly a Spear & Jackson I know nothing about.

1) Disston D8 etching still visible
2) Imperial ...etching still visible split nuts
3) Disston Keystone K1 etching good
4) Spear & Jackson back saw .........split nuts...stamped logo

Thanks for any help

Greg,
Spear & Jackson is an English maker. I have a 14" backsaw by S&J, filed cross cut, and it is an excellent saw.

Hi Greg, are you familiar with OldTools Mailing List Control Panel (http://www.brendlers.net/oldtools/oldtools.html)? The helpful and knowledgable folks at Old Tools can give you all the info you need or want on your new saws.

Enjoy, Tom

Very nice, Greg. Wish I could find saws like that in the wild.

Spear & Jackson is still in business...since 1760.

Here's their home page with a link to their history page:
http://www.spear-and-jackson.com/

And a short essay on them is at Wiktor's site:

Excellent saws once one goes back in time a bit.

Take care, Mike
