Anyone have any idea what this wood might be? I got it from my neighbor's shop, who's husband had passed away many years ago. It was a burl of some sort. The grain is very tight and had a sweet, fruity odor when I was working it. I was able to core the center for the hollow form. The bowl is 10" across by 4" deep, the HF is 7" diameter by 4" tall. Both have buffed gel poly finish.

Once again WOW!

Travis, I am new to turning and everytime I see one of you post I pull the wife in and show her and tell her I will never be this good but I want to be darn close. I have years to practice, but someday maybe.

Right now I am mostly pens and starting some pepper mills to try to pay for a bigger and better lathe

I don't know what is is, but it's remarkably similar to some wood I got from Fred Voorhees' property a couple years ago. Smooth with that same coloration through it; not like "normal spalting". Beautiful turnings!!

Two more beauties. The coloring looks a lot like some silver maple burl pieces I have, but they don't smell fruity.

Mighty fine looking turnings. Travis I hope someday I can turn half as good as you. Nice job.

Very beautiful Travis! I can't wait to get a coring system. I can't imagine that hollow form laying on the shop floor in shavings! What a waste that would of been! Keep them coming! It almost looks like buckeye burl.

Travis, what hollowing system are you using? Is it a captured system?

Reason I ask I that I often see your peices with a opening in the side from some inclusion or something and using my hollowing setup (Munro hollower guided by hand) I'm not sure how confident I would be to work something with a side opening like that.

thanks
Bob

Travis..........Your skills continue to amaze me! Gorgeous turnings both! The fact you were able to take the HF from inside the bowl just makes it more amazing! Great work!
