All right I do not have it yet but Charles is running a special with free shipping on all Crown tools till 11/10/06. I decided I just could not wait and picked up a 1/2 incher.

I have been working on some bigger stuff and the 3/8th gouge I have was starting to look a little small.

Just curious is their a standard for what size gouge you should use for a specific blank size.

By the way if anyone is interested in a DVR he has that on special as well.

I don't know if there is a size of gouge for a size of bowl blanks. I use a 1/2" and 3/8" with the Irish/Ellsworth grind on most all my bowls from tiny to 14". I also use a regular or production grind P & N bowl gouge in 3/8" and 1/2" like Mike Mahoney does for his final cuts on his bowls. It works pretty good especially for end grain tear out.

Bernie,
What is a production grind? Is it just a regular trasitional straight grind.

I typically use a 1/2"-slash-5/8" gouge for 95% of my turning...even for small stuff. (Ellsworth grind) I do have smaller bowl gouges, but rarely use them.

Thanks for the sale advice...everybody likes a good deal!
