This is such an unnoticed tool... But you guys/gals who are working in wood should have a second look.

I just got in the LV utility lamp. Instructions say that "metal thinner than 1/8" will greatly dimenish the holding power". I slapped one on my bandsaw wheel cover and it stuck like Titebond to walnut. I screwed the HD utility bulb in and what??? there was more light than from my old unit. And flick the switch... that switch is positive much unlike my old unit (Delta, there, I said it).

The magnet holds extremely well while the saw is running. The reflector works well... very well. The neck doesn't droop from vibration or weight. It is very stiff. The switch is a toggle switch that is POSITIVE. No flicker, no hassle.

Why did I mess with going through a couple of Deltas and another switch? I don't know. I do know that this light is superior.

David, I have that lamp and keep it over my finish bench to shine on my work while to see glue I might miss when I'm scraping and sanding. Use it all the time.
The last "toy" that I got from LV is the Optical Center Punch (Page 140 in latest catolog. I hit my mark exactly with that great piece of tooling. It is a joy to use!!! You replace the glass with the crosshairs with the punch and it is right on.

Gary,

I haven't used their center punch tool on wood. I do use it a LOT working with metal. I wish that I had bought that 30 years ago! Of course, Lee Valley may not have been there 30 years ago... Yes, it is a very fine tool for precision locating.

I think my finishing area needs about three lights. I haven't got that many to try, and I am not sure about the wattage for finishing lights, but if I finally decide that they will do the job, I will end up with LV utility lights.

I have the same light and I like the fact that I can use it in a "T" track, so I can easily move it around. Great light.

It's $58.50 USD, $71.50 to us Canadians! Seems a lot for a light, but I'll probably buy one anyway!

I does work very well. I got one from Shopsmith years ago. What I like about theirs is you can buy extra brackets that screw to your tools and you just move it and slip it in the bracket of the tool you are using. Does not have to be metal.
Shopsmith has it on sale for $44.07

Mack,

That stopped me from making the purchase too for about 5 years. Then the reality of "getting what I paid for" set in. Switches were horrible on my old units. Of course, I have only had the LV model for a week, so... I do think it will be better though.

i bought a bunch of flex shaft lamps from Ikea $15.00 or so each great light and the clamp almost anywhere. i have a large magnet for retrieving item from the bottom of the canal in the back yard when they are dropped (like my good hand saw on Friday morning while helping the crew shrink wrap the boat to the lift for the winter :( ) i place a 2x2 in between the handle of the magnet and clamp the light to that when needed
