I do not use my lathe (Shopsmith) as much as all my other tools so I am looking for a good chuck to use/learn with, without spending a lot of money. What would you suggest and where to purchase from.

Penn State has some Letter priced Chucks, but I don't know if they can be used with your Shopsmith, due to the threading of the spindle. I'd suggets giving them a call.

Grizzly has them for $45. You might check and see if they have your thread size. I like mine a lot. In fact I generally reach for it before the others.

Do you have a grizzly model number?

I was looking at some of the Penn State models but not sure how good they are. Do you own one? if so what model?

Dave mine was G8784 which is a 1 X 8. G8785 is 1 X 12, G8786 is 1 1/2 X 8 and G8783 is 3/4 X 16. They are $42.50.

Thanks! I had this posted over at WOOD for a few hours and nothing. All this info here in about 20min.

I have one of these Dave. Took me awhile being new to chucks to get the tennon turned right to hold on but you can't beat it for the money. Identical to the 4 jaw PSI chuck... most likely the same import.. but Grizzly costs half as much. Once you start using it and decide you want to upgrade you will have a back up chuck. Nice to have a couple around.

I have the PSI GMC3, one of their first knock-off chucks. It is just fine and a great value, especially when you start adding the cost of additional jaws that are optional with the high priced brands but come included with the PSIs. Definately consider.
