Stupid Noob question: Does anyone make a jacobs chuck with a #2 Morse taper that can be used in the tailstock?

Yes. You can get one from a number of sources. These are only a few.

You can get one from Harbor Freight for 9.99. I have been using one for about 6 months and done alot of drilling with it and it works great!

In general you pick the chuck that you want to use, note what taper it uses (JT33, JT6, etc) and then purchase a drill chuck arbor to match that taper and the Morris Taper of your lathe (mine has MT2 and MT3 tapers). I like to run Keyless chucks so I built mine up from part.

I bought one with a Jet brand a long time ago...this format is farily easy to come by from most suppliers that cater to turners. (Or industrial sources as Steven points to in a round about way. Enco, MSC, etc.)

As you can see, the answer is a big "YES". But, if you intend to use it for wood dowels and such, be sure to check the catalog offerings. A standard jacobs-type chuck will not always grip wood evenly. There are chucks made with jaws specifically designed to hold wood.
That said, the standard types are handy accessories for a shop with a lathe. I use mine for drilling on the lathe mounted on the tailstock. And for buffing in the headstock.

I just looked at HF and it looks like they're all threaded, or don't say anything at all about the taper.

Mine is a MT2 that I ordered. I can't seem to find it right now either. I had a heck of a time finding it when I ordred it, but I know they have it. If I remember tomorrow, I will go down and look for a number on it if you are interested in it.

If you intend to use it in the headstock as well, find one with a threaded hole in the end of the MT. They usually come with a 1/4 x 20. Then you can use a drawbar, a piece of threaded rod with a washer and wingnut or regular nut if you want to chuck up a buffing mandrel or sanding disk in your headstock. Keeps the chuck from falling out. Course you could just bring up the tailstock...

If you own a good sized drill press, the Jacobs chuck may already be on MT2 arbor.(Morse taper, not Morris) You can remove your DP chuck and use it in your lathe. Randy

Thanks Randy. That's basically what I'm going to do. My little Delta DP needed a new chuck anyway, so I ordered one for it. I also ordered an adapter that has a JT3 taper on one end and a #2 MT on the other. I should be able to just pop the chuck off the DP and use it on the lathe.
