Piece of 4/4 hickory from the scrap bin, about 9" wide, DO, Bealed, Ren. Wax. My photography, like my turnings, can always stand improvement. Color on last one is awful and I'm ticked that I left some fuzz in there from the buff....................Oh, well............

Critiques welcomed (and expected!).

Hope all have a great day, hope it's OK if I post some more stuff later.

VERY nice, Richard! I've been turning alot of Hickory lately for salad bowls. I find it can be hard to work with sometimes, with all the bark inclusions that I always seem to run into. Your piece looks great. (and alot like a wedding platter I'm having engraved right now). Good work!

Very beautiful platter.

It is interesting that dry hickory is the dickens to turn, but green hickory turns like butter. If you ever get a chance to get some hickory from a freshly cut tree, jump on the opportunity. I cut some in the spring once and got a real bath because it was so wet. It also cut wonderfully. I also love the aroma of hickory in the microwave.

Bill,

I've never had to sharpen my gouge as much as I did with this piece, much more than any other wood I have cut to date. Minerals, silica, or just plain hard????

I have one more larger piece of this, and my scrounger is on his way back to the scrap pile on Wednesday, we'll see what he conjurs up.............

I'm going to try and mirror the lip to the underside as well, a la Bernie's cherry plates, I think it will balance the piece a bit better.

Thanks to all for their kind words.
