I have been moving this piece of Walnut cut-off around my bandsaw for several months, even using it to try out my burning tool when I first made it.

Well, today I was digging through my pile of cut-offs to turn some confetti lamps and decided to see what I could salvage from that piece. I was amazed at the curl that was hiding in there! Only has a couple coats of Antique oil right now, not buffed yet. (I was too anxious to take some pics of it;) )

I am speachless Travis, that is one beautiful piece. just to think that it might have ended in a fire or as just more sawdust makes me cringe. That wood has some most radical figure in it and is absolutely awsome.

Tom, it's 7" diameter by about 2 1/2". Randy, I have no idea why they're called confetti lamps, but that's what the makers call them.

Wow.............those first two pics appear to show some sort of texturing effect. Ain't Mother Nature grand?

Simply beautiful.

As an afterthought, do you chuck these per the instructions that come with the lamps or use another method?

That much curl in wood like that is hard to find outside maple. Beuatiful wood and same for the project. Here is my dumb question for the day. Being I have never made one of those are they hollowed out or just drilled for the candle part???

Richard, I chucked it as I normally would a bowl, HF, etc. Start off between centers, turn the bottom and form a tenon. Chuck with tenon and turn the top, then drill the hole with a forstner bit held in the tailstock. Reverse and use the vacuum chuck to turn off the tenon and finish the bottom.
John, it's drilled for the lamp to fit, not hollowed.

I love when finding something like that in a piece of wood ! I recently bought some poplar for a bathroom cabinet and when I planed it down, it was curly ! and I only paid straight poplar prices. Too bad it's getting a pigmented laquer coating.

Wonderful confetti lamp ! I love the figure !

Can the confetti lamps be refilled?
Steve, these particular lamps can't be refilled. They are however, very inexpensive, less than $1 at Wal Mart or a craft store such as Michaels. The ones from Craft Supplies, http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/cgi-bin/shopper?preadd=action&key=990-0400 are refillable.
