View Full Version : Re-doing a semi-gloss finish

The finish on this side chest or nightstand is many coats of General Finishes gloss wipe-on varnish with the last coat being semigloss. It seems to me that the semigloss has diminished the figure, especially on the curly walnut. How can I fix this? Can I just add a topcoat of gloss, or will the flatteners in the semigloss still be dimming it?

Since the pulls are permanently attached, I'm reluctant to sand. But if I must, how much sanding is needed?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

John,
I would try #0000 stell wool with the grain....then use the gloss Arm R Seal. A final coat of Watco liquid wax buffed by hand with the grain may also help
