Hi Everyone,

Just finished this saw yesterday. Based upon the Disston #8 half-back saw.

It was fun to make.

Take care, Mike

Mike

That is truly beautiful. The lines of the tote are extremely graceful. And I like the addition of the medalion.

Hi Mike,

I like the saw. Very nice. The medallion is a nice touch.

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but for what type of sawing would a half back saw be best suited? :o I've never seen such a saw in the flesh or had anyone explain to me its intended use.

Very pretty Mike and I agree, the medallion is a great touch. I'm saving my pennies for one of your saws. ;)

Thank you, Everyone.

Ian, I use a half-back as a general bench saw, most often in conjunction with a bench hook. I do also use mine off-bench if I'm looking for a nice finish cut as they are generally of a finer pitch.

Because of the short back, they also don't droop as much as a non-backed saw when laid on their side, so for horizontal cuts for like trimming chair rungs/legs they work well.

Disston's literature also described cutting pieces inside of carcasses when fitting components. I figure they need to fit before getting to that stage so I haven't done that <g>.

Rip versions are also useful for deepening tenons too long for a fully backed saw.

Take care, Mike
