I have been working on a pile of Confetti lamps for the show I have coming up this weekend. I got a bunch of small oil lamps and a few larger ones form Wal-Mart. been using scraps and cutoffs from the pile of wood that surrounds my band saw. I grabbed up a large chunk that I didn’t cut for a bowl blank and decided to use it for a large confetti lamp and make use of a bark inclusion. Well I started working on it and this piece screamed that it didn't want to become a confetti lamp.
So I made it a HF.
Finish is 2 coats of Watco and 2 coats of Gel Poly, buffed with the Beall.
Measures 7" wide X 3 3/4" tall
Thanks for looking!

Very nice! Good to see you posting again Jim.

I'm having a little trouble trying to place the bowl in relation to the log from which the blank was cut. Is the pith included in the piece, and if so what do you do to keep it from causing trouble later on? Or was it just a very odd-shaped log?

Mark,
This piece came from the base of the trunk, right off the ground.
This tree was around 40" at the base. The position that the piece would be on the tree would be if you turned it up on its side. The opening comes from the valley of two root bases if you can imagine the shape of the outside of a tree at the base where the bark goes in and out between the large roots that come off the bottom.

It was part of a bark inclusion here is a cool pic I took while roughing it out if you look inside the form you can see some cool bark that was hiding inside.

Jim,
Thanks. Now I get it. And I can also say that from this point on, I will always re-think my options when I consider grinding a stump!:D

It must be the season but I saw a curly grained Jack-O-Lantern as soon as I saw the picture. That is a great piece that I sure wouldn't have seen in the chunk of wood it must have been. Very good eye there.
