This little chunk of spalted curly Maple had a small bark inclusion that worked out very nicely as a natural opening. 5" diameter by 4" tall, buffed Antique oil finish.

Man! I need to get out more. That's a nice piece there Travis. Love the spalting. Only thing around here I can find is Oak and Holly. I need to find some Maple. Great form too. How thin were you able to get the side walls and what did you use to hollow it out. Brian

Brian, the walls are 1/8" or so. I used my home-made mini hollowing rig to hollow it out.

Travis,
I like that little rig you made. Looks like you might have a laser pointer mounted on it also. I've not ever used a hollowing rig but might have to give one a try. Thanks for posting a pic of your setup. Brian

Oh, yes!! Travis, you nailed that one when you oriented the inclusion to be used as the opening. This is exquisite!

Nicely done Travis. The inclusion at the top just did the job. Beautiful piece.

What everyone else said and then some. You really know how to get the best orientation out of a piece of wood. Really a nice piece!

That statement's on the money. I'd like to figure out how he cocks his head to look at a piece. Beautiful Travis.

This one is too cool Travis, the natural opening in it gives it a special look, almost like something escaped from it.

That looks awesome. Something that we all hope to run into when we get a rough piece of wood.

Travis, Do you turn most of your HF's on the Jet mini?
Also, do you mind telling the dimensions of your hollowing rig setup?
It obviously works(very well) for you, but if you were to make another
setup would you keep the same dimensions or would you change something?
I've got the Jet mini and am about to get someone to weld me up a hollowing rig but only have Lyle Jamieson's dimensions which look to be much larger than what you used.

Thanks in Advance,
Jeff

Jeff, I'll do the smaller ones on the mini, just because it's fun. My rig is just a scaled down version of the Jamieson system, using 1/2" components. The dimensions of the D handle are 4" wide, 11" to the front of the "D" and 13" to the coupling. I use the John Jordan 1/2" curved bar for the roughing and just spin the rear rest 180 deg. to get to the center. I bent a 1/2" bar and tapped it for a scraper for finishing. Everything works just fine as is.;)
