My latest Aussie Burl, Red Mallee with an Ebony Finial and Foot. As with all my turnings I learn something. Remembering what I learn is sometimes a problem:eek: . With this box I learned that when you have two pieces of wood you should turn the small piece first, in this case the lid, and then turn the big piece, in this case the bottom to match. I did it in reverse and almost ran out of wood for the lid. The finish is the 3 step beall buff. As always your critiques are welcome and appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Nice work indeed. I hope I can get to that level someday. My concern is how did you use a bealle buffing system and not get caught on the rough edges and have that thing thrown across the room.

Keith,

You sure did justice to that piece of wood!
It is exquisite!

No criticism from me. This piece combines the best of art and craft into a functional sculpture that is in a class by itself!

Keith,

How did you attach the bottom and the finial?

Keith,
That is one fine looking piece. My wife said why can't I turn something like that. I've still got a lot to learn. Love the wood. Brian

Kietg, I forgot to ask. What are the dimensions.

Brian, sorry I forgot to post the dimensions...5-1/2" dia x about 5" overall heitht.

Pete, cut a recess in the bottom for the foot which was turned seperately and drilled a 1/8" hole in the lid for the finial to glue into.

Thanks for the comments.

Keith, this one's a very nice piece. I really like how you took advantage of the "natural edge" to define the lower portion.

I can't decide whether that is museum quality or heirloom quality. Regardless, I think it is beautiful.

Wow Keith, I always like these natural burl type boxes with the nice delicate finials. But this one goes even one step further with the ebony foot. I think that really sets it off well. It's really a beautiful box!

A very nice box Keith, I too think the contrast of the woods works very well.

Keith, that is a wonderful piece of work. I'm going to give it a few years before I try a piece of wood like that.
