Well another weekend has come and gone. What did YOU do this past weekend?

LOML and I spent the entire weekend at a cabin in the Ozark's to celebrate a little early our 20 year wedding anniversary. Can you believe that she put up with ME for 20 years? ;) Easy on the comments now!!! What a time we had....tree colors were very pretty but not yet "prime". Visited a few caves, hiked several trails and saw parts of Arkansas that were just beautiful. We ate a meal at the famous "Cliff House Inn" and what a beautiful site to see while eating.....the Ozarks!!!! We just got back a few minutes ago and just got all the "stuff" unloaded. PICS are posted below.

Best of Weeks......

I got the dresser carcase assembled this weekend and the door panels started. I ran into a bit of a snag on the hinges as noted on the post I made for hinge help. Cutting the dados with my router was pleasantly easy, so that method will move up on my list for the way to do things..

Our leaves took a beating in the high winds we had last week, so most of them have been blown off the trees. They were looking good before that happened. We may go do some leaf peeping next weekend before we put the Miata away for the winter months. :(

Well Friday night through 7:30 Saturday morning our dog had 5 puppies. Then with very little sleep I proceeded to start knocking the stucco off one side of the house. After a few hours with hammer & chisel I went to the rental store & rented a rotary hammer - nice tool but too big to lug up & down a 30' ladder for 2 days - man am I sore. Got it pretty much finished -just one little spot left all the way at the top & I'm paying someone to finish it cause I'm too tired

Sunday was Church then finishing the stucco removal - it was getting dark by the time I was done & cause I was so tired I almost broke my wrist (thought I did for a minute) pulling the 30' ladder down

After I iced my wrist down I decided I needed to do something fun - so I went to the shop & turned the outside of 2 bowls - Bill Grumbine's lessons kicked in & I ended up with the best finish from a tool that I've ever had. Thanks Bill! I only turned the outside cause I'm tired of turning on a faceplate so I'm going to buy a cheap 3 jaw chuck from Sears this week & finish them the right way. I oiled them down real good & hopefully that will keep them from cracking till I get back to them.

Started cutting/planing/jointing qswo for a prairie style sofa. Only one mistake - cut a rail a wee bit short. Not bad by my standard. Should have stopped an hour earlier though.
One thing I did notice was the discrepancy between the qswo from this mill and the previous mill I placed my orders with. I had gotten a gift certificate for this one. Suffice it to say, the boards from the most recent order had more than a few knots, mineral stains and had some rift sawn thrown in with the quarter sawn.
The boards from the first mill-WestPenn Hardwoods were full of rays, all qs and knot free. Have to place another order with WPH since I am relagating this current stash of wood to lesser projects. No affiliation at all with them, but a very satisfied customer.

MY son and grandson came over on Saturday since I needed a pickup truck to make a trip to my hardwood supplier. We picked up 840 sq ft of 3 1/4" wide prefinished red oak flooring. Gee- Guess what I'll be doing for a few days two weeks from now. Son also proceeded to make his normal raiding expedition down into the shop to see what new homemade hand tools I'd made since his last trip. He walked away with a Indian Rosewood marking knife, a rosewood handled awl, and one of my bit braces. Right now I have 42 boxes of hardwood flooring sitting on the living room floor aclimatizing. I ordered a set of good knee pads this morning Duluth Trading.

Sunday I managed to complete my Spiers style Infill smoothing plane from the kit which Doug and Ben at Shepherd Tool sold me. After I get the final coat of finish on it I'll post pix on the Neander side of the Creek.

My folks came down to visit the grandkids (& the wife & I). We took in a folklife festival in Milan, TN. There were a few carvers and turners there as well as the cottin ginning, sorghum molasses making, etc. We also visited a civil war site, Fort Donelson. Good food and a little grandparent spoiling were also parts of the weekend. No woodworking for me. I am making up for that next weekend in Nashville when I visit the Wood Works show (hope to meet the "Old Man") and the new Woodcraft store in Franklin, TN.

What a beautiful weekend. The weather kept drawing me outside.

I did manage a little shop time where I cored out and waxed a few bowls and roughed a cherry hollow form (well maybe it will become a hollow form).

The largest bowl is 19" across and 9" deep.

Mostly I preped the house so repairs from the Isabel tree damge could start this week.

Thanks

No woodworking here this week-end. On Friday, we headed out to Myrtle Beach, SC, for the week-end. Did the outlets for shopping and got started on Christmas gifts.
Saturday night we went to the Alabama Theater at North Myrtle Beach. Had a great time watching the Coasters, the Platters, and the Drifters. This show was fantastic. If you ever get a chance to visit the Myrtle Beach area, check out the Alabama Theater.

It was largely a productive weekend. I "finished" a bookcase for the kitchen so I can get it installed sometime this week. I still have to assemble the glass-front doors, but wanted the unit in place to be able to account for any anomalies in the scribing and fitting to the adjacent stone and so that it can be used. (We really need to get the remaining stuff put away so SWMBO can re-start the cleaning service... )

Some turning also happened--another thread speaks of that, and since the pot rack finally arrived from Williams Sonoma, I got that hung, too.

I also finally got the finish on the 18" cherry Shaker candle stand shown below...it's been sitting in the dining room since late last winter waiting for the clear coats. This is built from the design in the Taunton book, In The Shaker Style and was fun to build. The dovetails for the legs were cut while the spindle was still on the lathe using a jig to hold the router and the indexing system to place the slots in the correct position. The legs have a subtle taper from 3/4" thick at the spindle to 1/2" thick at the tips which directly compliments the 1/2" thick top. Unlike in the article, I did not use a jointer...I used a belt sander upside-down in a vise. That felt safer to me for that particular operation! Speaking of those legs, they really are the same color as the rest of the piece...the sunlight seems to have reflected a bit differently when I shot the photo. I do want to rub out the top a bit before deciding where to put it in the house. I also plan on making more of these...great project.

All in all...a great woodworking weekend!

OK....I told you that I would post a few pics...so here they are.

Here is the cabin we stayed in. Very nice and quiet!! The loudest noise out these was the animals and the wind blowing.

As you can see here....this tree? is still alive and growing. It simply sprouted limbs on the tops of each living section and kept on growing. The trunk is no more that 1-1/2" thick at the thickest part. Average wall thickness of the trunk (or what is left of it) is right at 1". Cool!!!!
Here is a tree showing just where all the crooked lumber we buy comes from!!! I just couldn't pass up taking a pic of that tree as I seem to have lots of boards that look like the trunk of that tree.!!! :)
Well....there you have it....I have LOTS more....but I will spare you the boring pics of our trip. GREAT time to be in the Ozarks...!!!!

Dennis,

Looks like you and LOYL had a great time. I really like the Buffalo River area of Arkansas and have spent many pleasureable days there.

We spent some time in the Ozarks as well Saturday. Took our 8 year old grandaughter, Hannah, on her first train ride from Van Buren to Winslow and back. The coaches were built in the early 1900's with interiors of solid mahogany. You don't see craftsmanship like that in public transportation very often. Hannah was most impressed by the tall trestle and the long dark tunnel.

Sunday, my youngest daughter, almost 21, and I built a cage for her friend's iguana. My daughter learned the joys of pocket holes, really, and we both had a great time as it was the first time we built something together. Previously, she had shown no interest.

Have a great week all,
Bob

No woodworking for me. We spent the kids fall break in Chicago. We visited Navy Pier, Lincoln Park zoo, the Field Museum, etc. My first visit to Chicago and I was impressed. The weather was a nice change from our Central Florida hot humid days.

The Field Museum and the Lincoln Park zoo are awesome. My kids (who have been to the Orlando area attractions many, many times) really enjoyed both.

I did miss out on seeing Wrigley field. The last two NLCS games were played while we were in Chicago and I just couldn't make time later in the week to make it up there. Well, next time hopefully.
