I guess I'll have to add this lathe to the list when someone is looking for a good starter lathe..........

Nova 1624-44 Lathe (http://www.teknatool.com/products/Lathes/1624/Nova%20_1624.htm)

48208

48209

48210

48211

1.5 Hp motor, reversible, swivel head, the stand is included.......... under $1000

I think this would be a VERY good lathe for a lot of guys to start on.......

We shall see I guess, I saw this on "The Wood Working Channel" and I was impressed, so I thought I'd share it.

Cheers!

Also keep in mind that they are re-releasing the cast iron stand for this also, even though they keep showing pics of the one with spindley legs.

The top part of this "Spindly Legs" are cast, and the legs are steel tubes, which you could fill with sand, and then this would be a fairly solid stand, I think.

The nice thing about the "Spindly" leg stand is that it is included with the lathe, so I like that price!

No Reeves drive on this one too, you have to change the belts for different speed ranges, but the belt change over looked dead easy and fast, like 20 seconds.

I dunno, if I was in the market for a good beginner lathe, that I could use for the foreseeable future, this one would be high on my list for under $1000.

Cheers!:D

What is the range of speeds on this one?

214 to 3600 rpm according to the web site. 16"X24". Worth considering.

214 to 3600 rpm according to the web site. 16"X24". Worth considering.

The name is 1624-44, which I understand to mean 16" swing over the ways, (headstock not swiveled) 24" between centers, and 44" between centers with one extention bed.

This looks like a very good redesign from Nova, I bet they sell a ton of them.

I'm VERY pleased with my DVR 3000.

Cheers!

Did they list an expected price for this lathe? I saw you said under $1,000. After the first of the year I will have $600 to spend on a lathe just wondering if this is in that range.

Wow....that's a nice design. I really like that they don't have the motor in the way of a turning behind the headstock. Those orta sell very well.

I ordered one this week from woodcraft, 999.00 or 989.99 they weren't quite sure.

It appears from the brochure that the motor is not included since it says that 1.5 HP is "recommended". Is that correct? I actually would prefer one without a motor because I have a Baldor Vector motor and controller looking for a lathe to be used on.

I looked at all the specs carefully. As far as I can see a motor is included. Otherwise, why would they offer a 1 year guarantee on a non existent motor?

I believe the recommended 1.5 hp motor is just a recommendation for those who want to modify, I'm guessing.

My local Woodcraft didn't want to carry it but I told them if they brought one in I'd leave it in the store for them to play with and buy it a week or two later. They liked that idea. It should arrive 12/19/06.

I have no idea where to put it in my getting-more-crowded workshop.

They're just shipping now. WC is the only vendor until April. I know some other places were taking pre-orders, but I thought that was kind of weird since there is no way Teknatool would violate the exclusivity contract for just a couple of lathes; and I don't know who would put money down 6 months in advance.

I picked up my 1624-44 yesterday, the fit and finish is fair.

Looks like someone dropped the faceplate and motor pulley, dings need to be filed. The worst part is the motor pulley won't fit the motor shaft. I now have to wait till I can contact nova on Monday morning. I almost forgot there is a big burr on the tool rest that was painted over. Now to decide on a chuck once all the problems are taken care of.

I have had my 1624-44 about 5weeks now, love it. Guess it was a mistake when they shipped it early but I didn't have to send it back!! Purchased it with outrigger and extra bowl rest. Total with shipping for all from Woodcraft was $1343.22 and that included drop lift tail gate on delivery truck. 11/2 hp motor is included:o have not added weight to mine and have turned a 16" cherry bowl outboard. Roughed out with chainsaw about 20"dia by 8" thick. Mounted with 2" sheet metal screws through 3" faceplate and 9"dia.x3/4 plywood plate. Low speed at 215rpm, very little vibration, I couldn't believe it. Wanted a bigger bowl but a soft section of pith broke off so I turned it alittle smaller:mad: It fits my limited space and was right where I wanted to be price wise. If anyone has questions, email me. Thanks, skip

I was told today that a free G3 chuck is going out with the first 300 of these sold. Woodcraft told me they didn't come in yet from technatool. Not bad huh?
