I finish my cross cut sled today. Base is 3/4 oak with oak runners. Back fence is 1 3/4 in red oak and the front fence is 1 1/2 also in red oak. I just need to finish the bottom of base. Anyone have any suggestions on how to finish the bottom.
Very happy with the way it turned out...

I'm no expert but I used dewaxed shellac for the sealing properties. Sanded to 400 between coats till it was real smooth, then paste wax. SLides real nice.

I used an oil/varnish blend on the mahogany fence, paste wax on the underside of BB ply and the oak runners, nothing any place else.

Tom, all I have ever done is a couple coats of wax and then waxed a couple times a year.

Your sled looks similar to mine. May I recomend that you add a box orhttp://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=48178&stc=1&d=1160333266 a block on the back end of the sled. This keeps the blade covered on push through. as for finishing it's up to you. Mine is about 5 years old and still no finish.
