The bench is made from 8/4 hard maple. It measures approx 27" W x 69" L x 39" H. The top is a solid 3 3/4" thick. The vice hardware and handles were purchased from Lie-Nielsen. The base was constructed with mortise and loose tenon jointery. The top is bolted to the base with 4 lag bolts through over-sized holes. The finish is 4 coats of BLO. Enjoy the pics :)

Very nice bench, Bryan! Where did you get he inspiration from for the design?

May I also ask where you got the maple? I have been on the fence for while on whether to build or buy a bench, and some of the reasons that push me towards the "buy" side are the price of maple here in Austin and lack of machinery to dimension the wood (dimensioning with hand tools only doesn't sound like a lot fun).

That's a beauty. Maybe I'm selfish but I get more excited finishing a shop made tool stand or assembly table than I do making something for someone's living room. ;-)

Bruce,

I got the inspiration from The Workbench Book by Scott Landis, Taunton Press. It's a variation on the modern hybrid in Chapter 5. It's also very similar to the bench Lie-Nielsen makes and uses when they go to a woodworking show.

I got the maple from Austin Hardwoods, and yes, at $5.95 a bf, it wasn't exactly cheap. They had a large selection at the time and they are open on Saturday. You can also get it at Fine Lumber, and they can even mill it to dimension for you for a price. I think Fine Lumber probably has a better selection than Austin Hardwoods, but they are not open on the weekend.
